In a small town called Squamish in Canada, there is a forest that rock climbers love. Inside this forest, there was a special rock. It wasn’t a giant mountain or a precious gem.
It was just a sixty-pound piece of granite that sat on the ground. The local climbers named it “Portable.” Even though it was just a rock, everyone loved it. It was the perfect shape for people to practice their grip and balance before climbing bigger walls. For years, Portable sat in the same spot, like a quiet friend waiting for visitors.

Then, one day in September, something sad happened. Portable disappeared. The climbers came to the forest, but the rock was gone. There was only an empty hole in the dirt where it used to be.
The community was heartbroken. They posted messages online asking for help, but nobody knew where Portable had gone. It seemed like someone had taken the heavy stone as a souvenir, and the climbers thought they would never see their little mascot again.
But four months later, a miracle happened. A Canadian climber named Ethan was on a trip far away in California, more than a thousand miles from home. He got a message that Portable might be nearby.

He drove to a desert climbing spot, and there, sitting in the dust, was a familiar rock. But it looked different. Someone had glued silly “googly eyes” on it and put a red wool hat on top! Ethan pulled off the hat and checked the shape of the stone. He knew immediately, it was Portable.
Ethan picked up the heavy rock and put it in the back of his car. He covered it with blankets to keep it safe. He decided to drive it all the way back to Canada, a long journey to return it to the forest where it belonged.
The little rock that vanished had gone on a huge adventure across the country, but thanks to one lucky climber, it was finally going home.
