Back in the 12th century the people of Woolpit were just ordinary English farmers working their fields. It was a totally normal harvest day until they noticed something moving inside the deep ditches they used to trap wolves. Two small children climbed out of the dirt. But these were not local kids playing a prank on the village. Their skin was the exact color of a green leaf.
This strange event completely terrified the locals. They dropped their tools and stared at the boy and girl who looked like they belonged to another world.
A Very Strange Arrival

The villagers gathered around the children in absolute shock. The kids wore clothes made from weird materials that nobody recognized. When the farmers tried to ask them where their parents were, the children replied in a language that sounded completely alien. They were crying and looked completely exhausted.
The locals took them to the home of a wealthy landowner named Sir Richard de Calne. He offered them a massive feast. But the children refused to touch the bread, meat, or fruit. They acted like they had never seen human food before. For days they starved themselves and cried. Then a servant brought in a basket of freshly cut broad bean stalks. The children tore into them frantically. They survived on nothing but raw beans for months.
The Tragic Fate of the Boy

Adapting to this new noisy and bright world was incredibly difficult for them. The boy was younger and much weaker than his sister. He became very depressed and soon fell severely ill. No medieval medicine could save him. He passed away shortly after arriving in Woolpit.
The girl was much stronger. She slowly adapted to her new life. As she started eating regular food a bizarre transformation happened. Her green skin slowly faded away until she looked like a normal English girl. She eventually learned to speak the local language. And that is when she finally explained the crazy story of where she came from.
A Story From Another World

Her tale only made the villagers more confused. She said she and her brother came from a place called Saint Martin’s Land. In her world there was no sun at all. Everything was wrapped in a permanent twilight. She claimed that every single person who lived there had green skin.
She explained that one day she and her brother were taking care of their father’s cattle. They heard a loud ringing sound that echoed like giant bells. They followed the noise into a large cave and wandered in the dark for a long time.
Suddenly they saw a bright light. When they walked toward it they emerged from the wolf pits into the blinding English sunlight. The heat and brightness overwhelmed them. Before they could find their way back into the cave the villagers caught them.
Science or Something Else?

Modern historians and doctors have spent years trying to explain this story. Some think it was just a local fairy tale that got out of hand. But there are highly detailed accounts written by two different trusted writers from that exact time period. They treated it as a completely real historical event.
Doctors suggest the green skin might have been a severe case of chlorosis. This is a type of anemia caused by a very poor diet that can actually give the skin a greenish tint. Others think the children might have been orphans fleeing a war who hid in the dark forests until they were traumatized and lost.
But the girl’s specific details about a twilight world keep the wilder theories alive. Some people still wonder if those children somehow slipped through a crack in time or walked out of a hidden underground dimension. We will probably never know the absolute truth.
