Meet the Humpback Whales
Humpback whales are some of the biggest animals on our planet. How big? They can be 15 meters long! That’s about as long as THREE cars parked in a row!
But here’s the coolest part: Even though they’re HUGE, they’re actually really gentle and friendly. It’s like having a friend who’s a giant, but a nice giant who’s careful not to step on you.
Why Do Whales Come to Tonga?
Every year, mama whales swim all the way to Tonga from far, far away. You know why? To have their babies!
The water near Tonga is nice and shallow and calm. It’s like a perfect baby pool for tiny whales (well, “tiny” for whales – they’re still pretty big!). The mama whales stay there for about two months while their babies get bigger and stronger.

What Happens When You Swim With Them?

- gently touch you with their nose – Super carefully, because they know they’re really big and you’re really small. It’s like when you pet a tiny kitten very gently.
- smack their big tails on the water – SPLASH! They’re showing off and having fun!
- They sing songs – This is maybe the most magical part. Whales sing beautiful songs underwater. It sounds like a mix of moans, chirps, and whistles. And the sound is so loud and strong, you can even hear it on the beach!
How Smart Are These Whales?
Super smart! Even though they’re gigantic, whales are very careful swimmers. They know exactly where you are in the water, and they’re VERY careful not to bump into you or hurt you.

The Whale Journey
After the mama whales and their babies spend about two months in Tonga, they have to leave. Where do they go? All the way to Antarctica! That’s at the very bottom of the Earth where it’s super cold and icy.
It’s a REALLY long trip. Imagine swimming from one side of the world to the other. That’s what these whales do every single year!

People who have swum with these whales say it’s one of the most amazing things they’ve ever done. Imagine floating in beautiful blue water, and then this massive, gentle creature glides right past you.
