It was the summer of 1853 in Saratoga Springs New York. A highly exclusive resort was packed with ridiculously wealthy people who expected absolute perfection from their meals. Down in the hot cramped kitchen was a chef who was rapidly losing his patience. He was about to accidentally create a multi billion dollar global snack empire. And he was going to do it entirely out of pure spite.
The chef was a man named George Crum. He was famous for his incredible cooking skills and his very short temper. He did not like being told how to do his job.
The Customer Who Complained Too Much

A very rich man sat down in the fancy dining room and ordered a plate of fried potatoes. Back then potatoes were served thick and soft. They were supposed to be eaten gracefully with a silver fork. Crum sent out a perfectly normal and delicious plate of food. But the wealthy guest took one single bite and immediately flagged down the waiter. He sent the entire meal back to the kitchen.
He loudly complained that the cuts were way too thick and completely soggy. He demanded a better batch.
Crum was annoyed but he kept his cool. He calmly sliced another potato slightly thinner and fried it up. He sent the new plate out to the dining room expecting the issue to be resolved. The waiter brought it back a few minutes later with the exact same arrogant complaint. The wealthy customer was acting like a total snob. He refused to eat them.
A Recipe Driven By Pure Anger

At this point Crum was absolutely furious. He decided to teach this annoying customer a harsh lesson. He wanted to make a plate of food so ridiculous that it would be physically impossible to eat.
He grabbed his sharpest kitchen knife and sliced a potato so incredibly thin that you could practically see the light shining through it. He dropped these paper thin slices into a boiling pot of hot oil. He intentionally left them in the grease until they were completely hard and crispy.
To make the prank even worse he grabbed a massive handful of salt and dumped it all over the crunchy ruins. He knew the rich customer would not even be able to stick a fork into them without the potatoes shattering into a million tiny pieces. It was designed to completely ruin the man’s dinner. Crum sent the aggressive plate of food out to the table and waited for the guest to storm into the kitchen and yell at him.
The Prank That Backfired Completely

The waiter finally came back into the kitchen. He was carrying a totally empty plate. The chef was incredibly confused.
The wealthy customer did not hate the salty prank at all. He absolutely loved it. He begged the kitchen staff to make him another giant batch of these strange crispy potato slices. Soon other wealthy guests in the dining room saw the loud crunchy food and demanded their own plates.
Crum realized his angry joke was actually a massive culinary breakthrough. The restaurant quickly added them to the official menu as Saratoga Chips. They became a massive local sensation overnight. People traveled from all over the country just to try the loud and crunchy snack. Eventually smart businessmen figured out how to mass produce them and put them in bags to sell in grocery stores everywhere. The most famous junk food on the planet was born entirely because a tired cook wanted to annoy a rich guy.
